My art practice has primarily consisted of using wood to express my impressions from nature. For this piece I have combined my wood and glass practices to make an object that includes the four classical elements from Greek philosophy. Wood consists of Earth, Water, and Air, while glass includes these plus Fire. Water is used in every aspect of glass blowing: to cool the pipe after gathering molten glass, to cool the tips of tools used for manipulating it, and, after the glass object has been placed in the annealer, to crack the used glass from the pipe.

I began my art practice in late 1998. For the first 20 years this focused on woodturning that incorporates color, surface textures, or 3-D carving. I am currently a full-time scientist who studies plant evolutionary biology, and a part-time artist in whatever time I can spare from academia. My botanical training has served me well in my woodturning endeavors because the natural world offers many inspirations, especially when it is examined at high magnification. My work reflects nature as interpreted through my intimate knowledge of plant morphology and anatomy.
