Andy Cole, Honolulu, Hawai'i
Heart of the Milo Tree, 2023
Hawaiian milo
6 x 11 x 12 inches

This is a five piece natural edge nested bowl set turned from Milo which is one of Hawaii's treasured hardwoods. The dimensions given are for the largest of the five pieces.

Throughout his life, the intricate beauty of wood grains and the amazing works of wood art has fascinated Andy. After learning the basics in woodturning about twentyfive years ago through a class at the local Woodcraft store, he was hooked! What started as a hobby soon blossomed into a full time passion and profession. Andy was soon connected with the Honolulu Woodturners Club and the American Association of Woodturners where he was able to hone his skills by learning from others both locally and internationally. It didn’t take long before his work was sought by galleries and can now be found in notable collections around the world. It also gives Andy a great sense of satisfaction knowing that a tree that stood for decades rooted in the ground can live on indefinitely in turned form as fine art. While he enjoys many aspects of turning, producing natural edge bowls gives Andy the ability to integrate the organic beauty of wood into an aesthetically pleasing form. Not wanting to waste the inside of the vessel, he learned how to core multiple natural edge nested pieces from one piece of wood. Andy’s nested set demonstrations are always very popular with turners who have attempted coring with varying degrees of success. He rejects the notion of being a master, but has learned many tips that he is eager to share with others.Although Andy loves to spend time in his own studio, he finds it even more rewarding demonstrating for the public and teaching hands-on workshops for others. Andy has demonstrated at national and regional symposiums, and has been featured in numerous woodturning magazines. His teaching style is graced with expertise, a little bit of humor, and a whole lot of infectious enthusiasm!
