Balancing Beast
Maple, milk paint
5” x 8” x 3”

Multi-axis turned maple, textured, and painted with milk paint. Loosely inspired by a sea horse.

Theme Statement
“Patterns, created by the interplay of texture and color, are a predominant theme in my work. Most forms in nature, whether sea life, insects, reptiles, flora or whatever else, provide endless inspiration for creating patterns. This little balancing beast is loosely inspired by a sea horse (or hippocampe in French- it sounds much nicer).”

Artist's Statement
“Growing up in part on a tiny island in a remote part of the West Indies created in me a strong connection to vibrant colors and the outdoors, especially sea-life; shells, plants, insects, and reptiles are often my sources of inspiration. I find my work, whether functional or sculptural, is hugely influenced by the colors, forms and textures that imprinted on me during that time. Living in rainy Oregon has only reinforced a need for color. In woodturning, I am particularly attracted to the effects one can achieve by combining different textures, whether wood grain, tool marks or added textures, and paint layers and different woods.”

About Marjin Wall
"I live in Portland, Oregon and developed a passion for woodturning during a workshop with Mike Hosaluk. I just finished the 'formation longue' at the Ecole Escoulen, Tournage sur Bois, in Aiguines, France and am transitioning from the full-time business world to making turning and wood art my primary focus."
