Small Hinoki Bowl, 2022
Cindy Pei-Si Young | Taoyuan City, Taiwan
Hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa)
2.75 x 3.9 inches | 7 x 10 cm

Hinoki (Japanese cypress) was one of the best architectural materials in Taiwan several decades ago. I was lucky to obtain a hinoki beam when an old building was renovated. Even though the form changed as the beam became empty bowls, people appreciated not only the bowls, but also the material, its history, and the era when hinoki played an important role in our lives. This special connection between hinoki and the people shows that the intangible contents could be within the form.
