Well-respected for his mineral inlay work, artist Stephen Hatcher brings his skills to an ornamentally-turned box by the late Gorst DuPlessis.

Artist's Note

"In 2007 my friend Gorst duPlessis sent me two of his exquisite ornamental turnings, one to decorate for the EOG Auction in 2008. Gorst thoughtfully sent two so I had a spare should a mistake occur with the first. No mistakes occurred and the piece was well received. In 2015 Gorst passed away and coincidentally I came across the second unfinished piece in storage. So I have finished this second piece for the 2016 EOG in his honor with his favorite theme: geckos and dragonflies.

Gorst was widely loved by all who knew him. Our political opinions that could not have been more disparate but we were woodturners and good friends who shared a love of wood art and wine and each other's conversation. He was a gentleman, scholar, and amazing woodturner."

About Stephen Hatcher

Stephen Hatcher showed an aptitude for realistic drawing at an early age. Upon finishing high school he earned income painting murals in homes. Though art has held a lifetime interest for Stephen, several years at the University of Washington lead to degrees in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics. During his 20-year career as an electronics entrepreneur Stephen developed numerous cutting-edge devices for the wireless communications industry. Retiring from this field, Stephen turned his focus to woodturning and stone carving. Combining these techniques led to his unique style of artwork.
