Untitled - basket work, radial construction
Spalted maple
4.5 x 4.25 inches | 11.43 x 10.8 cm

My wax-supported turning work requires that I first construct the blank that is ultimately turned. In this particular style of construction, I start with a solid block that is sliced into veneers. Vertical spacers are then used between the layers to producing a radial corrugation effect. Due to the delicate nature of the structure, I use wax as a temporary medium for support during the turning process.

Turning these structures results in pieces that have a strong resemblance to baskets. I particularly like the spalting and how it ties the layers together. The various gaps and breaks of the spalted wood add an aged and worn look and are intentionally included.

A contemporary piece of work from the same spalted maple is in the collection of the Honolulu Art Museum.
