"In most all of my work there is a deep connection to nature, but also man's tenuous part in it. There is something to be said for just getting lost in the woods, where your thoughts escape along the flight paths of birds, and your mind singularly listens to their song. Their feathers carried this son of a birdcarver home and documented some echo of that feeling in this sculpture."

Derek Weidman, a full time sculptor, was born in 1982 and lives in rural Pennsylvania close to Philadelphia. He has spent nearly two decades working with wood and a decade almost exclusively exploring the sculptural capabilities of a wood lathe. He is known primarily for innovating and pushing the boundaries of multi-axis work, expressed in his Animal series which reside in some public collections and museums, and many private collections around the world.
