I am interested in the transformation and contrasts discovered through woodturning. The process of converting a featureless block of wood into a graceful, symmetrical form is always fascinating and full of surprises. While working at the lathe, all the details and color of the object are integrated into a spinning blur that reveals only its outline. At rest, the same object can disclose complex details and dramatic coloring while possessing an entirely different sense of motion.

Palm wood from a tree removal on a golf course.
Turned wet, scraped with wire brush, dried, bleached, applied walnut dyed Danish oil, multiple coats.

Palm is an interesting material. The material is not like familiar trees conifers and hardwoods which are dicots and have the familiar tree rings. Palms are monocots and the trunk wood is characterized by a soft pith with many hard longitudinal fibers -- kind of like celery. The fresh-cut (wet) wood quickly attracts fungi but bleaching a turned form results in a piece ready to take dyes or other coloring.
