The shape of a turning can be the framework for making surface figure that expresses signficant thought. XX Alternatively, the structure may simply provide a platform for ornamentations that summon the mystery and resonance of repeated patterns.

This work employs the latter practice to explore fractal-like shapes on a hollow form. XX This work is constructed from hand-turned sections that are joined to make a hollow vessel that is then engraved using my home-built ornamental turning machine. The contour and naming of this work honors Binh Pho who inspired many of us with his creativity, energy, and generosity.

Educated in engineering, Dewey Garrett took up the wood lathe in order to develop general woodworking skills for cabinetry and furniture. He found the process so stimulating and challenging that wood-turning has become a dedicated creative pursuit.. He is a self-taught turner and makes and modifies his tools to create unique turnings. His work is an ongoing exploration of the structure of forms constrained by the symmetry and simplicity of a lathe.

His work is regularly exhibited in National and International juried competitions for both woodturning and three-dimensional art.
