Queensland, Australia
The history of Cairns and North Queensland incorporates a significant timber heritage from felling through to processed veneers and plywood. Through out my life I have worked with wood in many applications. I simply enjoy the challenges of working with wood. Exploring and utilizing its wide colour and grain palette has generated my interest in combining flat work skills with turning – predominately spindle turning. PP Lamination, not segmentation, of timbers into billets then cutting through them on the lathe to create illusion and generate curiosity has captured my imagination. A simple machine, the lathe and hand tools facilitate endless permutations with traditional single axis or multi axis and therming techniques. PP Through lamination I explore and craft the orientations of end grain to highlight the medullary and vascular structures of Australian and exotic hardwoods. Spin tops, goblets and small bowls are ideal subjects that consume my available time at the lathe. My interests in wood turning also extend to promoting a culture of safety through education promoting a balanced approach to hazard and risk management.
