Juniper with walnut ties, 3.5 x 7.5 x 3 inches

A tall split trunk juniper lost one of its lengths in a storm. It was wonderful to find that a sapsucker woodpecker had worked away and left beautiful lines of holes for later meals of sap and insects.

A way of keeping the bark on a bowl of such wood is to undercut the rim. Here, ties were used to bind the cracks while turning and adds subtle decoration. The interior has been left unfinished to allow one to receive the Juniper aroma if you care for a whiff.

I turn my bowls with solar power on a remote Pacific Northwest island. Teased by complex bark and intense grain; cracks and voids then become a further draw. These elements are the design cues I follow to create each piece. As the wood lathe spins, the joys of exploration guide my final forms. Occasionally these delightful imperfections are preserved by carefully placed hardwood ties adding a discreet elegance. When held in one's hands; gentle curves and soft finishes are the final reward.
