There is a feeling of holding space when we conceive of a bowl. Will a salad reside within? some yarn, our wishes? Here, I hoped to present a feeling of something that can be lightly held but at the same time lost. It is sensed again and again; then evaporates. Perching the white wood of holly on a sliding curve adds to the percauity. The dark base of Walnut reminds us of the stark contrast of having and of not.

Diana Friend spent many years in cabinet work and house restoration. Before that she made a living as a professional French Horn player. Additionally she received a Masters in Arts for teachers; teaching elementary School children in Music. Diana has been turning wood for 15 years. Her studio is located on a small island in the Pacific Northwest and is run on Solar Power. Her interests lie in complex bark, burl and intense grain. Cracks and voids are a further draw. These elements are the design cues she follows to create each piece. As the wood lathe spins, the joys of exploration guide her final forms. Her work has been shown at the Smithsonian Craft, Philadelphia Museum Craft and the American Craft Council Shows. She received the Wharton Esherick Award in Wood at the Philadelphia show. The work is made solely by Diana from chainsaw cut to final finishing.
