Diana Friend | Friday Harbor, Stuart Island, Washington
Maa Raft at Sunset, 2020
Spalted madrone, black walnut, ebony pins
6 x 6 x 6 inches | 15.24 x 15.24 x 15.24 cm

What wood in the Pacific Northwest can express all 4 of Nature's Elements? The crooks of small branches in Madrone trees spalt and almost burn when the canker fungi latches on. Here we had Earth (the fungi), Wind (the spread) and Fire (the outcome). A little Water ( the rain) keeps the fungi thriving. All four elements create this remarkable wood that can be turned into little birds. Mine became a flock of seagulls, not unlike those who rest on a tangle of seaweed. They float in the ocean, on the currents, squawking away, continually, jostling for position.

Maa: Orcadian for Seagull

Diana goes about turning with hopes to let the wood speak for itself. Thirteen years at the lathe has been spent making interesting bowls and platters that highlight a wood’s bark, cracks, voids and grain. Living on a small island in the Pacific Northwest she sources wood from nearby downed trees. Other supplies come from Seattle, WA neighborhoods. All presently turned on a solar-powered Stubby.
