Diana Friend | Friday Harbor, Washington
Morning Fog,
Madrone burl
3.25 x 6.5 x 3 inches
This piece of wood toppled over at my island neighbors. It sat in a bit of a boggy area and was finally rescued and turned. What a lovely accent to the wood this history makes.
I turn my bowls, with solar power, on a remote island in the Pacific Northwest. My interests lie in complex bark, burl and intense grain. Cracks and voids are a further draw. These elements are the design cues I follow to create each piece. As the wood lathe spins, the joys of exploration guide my final forms. Delightful imperfections are then preserved and can add a discreet elegance. I encourage those who see my bowls to pick them up and feel the lightness. When held in one's hands; gentle curves and soft finishes are the final reward. Surprisingly, most of my wood is found. It may be bound for the city landfill or lying on the forest floor. I create the work, on my own, from the first chainsaw cut to the final finish.
Diana Friend spent many years in cabinet work and house restoration. Before that she made a living as a professional French Horn player. Diana has been turning wood for 15 years. Her studio is located on a small island in the Pacific Northwest and is run on Solar Power. Her work has been shown at the Smithsonian Craft, Philadelphia Museum Craft and the American Craft Council Shows. Plus she has been in various galleries along the way.
