Diana Friend spent many years in cabinet work and house restoration. Before that she made a living playing and teaching the French Horn. Additionally she received a Masters in Arts for teachers; teaching elementary School children in Music.
Diana began turning wood in 2009. She found that learning an instrument aided greatly in how she would go about learning to turn. Years of practice along with classes with David Ellsworth, Jimmy Clews and Glenn Lucas has allowed her to do the work she was interested in.
Her present studio is located on a small island in the Pacific Northwest and is run on Solar Power. Diana is inspired by the wood she finds and the work to explore what it will be. She is intrigued by complex bark, burl, intense grain, spalting, cracks and voids. These elements become design cues to follow. Hardwood Ties are often added to keep her safe. And then, add a discreet elegance to the final outcome.
Her work has been shown at the Smithsonian Craft, Philadelphia Museum Craft and the American Craft Council Shows. In 2022 she received the Wharton Esherick Award in Wood. She received an AAW Symposium Excellence Award for her submission to the POP Instant Gallery in 2024.
