Eleanor Lakelin | London, United Kingdom

Horse chestnut burl 3.5 x 3.5 x 3.5 inches | 14.5 x 9 x 9 cm

In my Echoes of Amphora Series of work the form is literally the content. It represents the tension between two dimensions of time and beauty. Firstly the scale of human civilization and culture - our search for formal perfection, refinement and balance represented by a classical vessel form. Secondly the scale of geological time in terms of nature - chaotic, vital, imperfect, surging growth- a disruption of tidy order. Tiny as it is, this piece is still a reminder of the interface between humans and nature of fragmentation and loss but also survival.

Brought up in a rural village in Wales, Eleanor Lakelin re-trained as a cabinet-maker in 1995.
Since 2011 she has concentrated on the vessel form, studying with established makers whenever possible but largely teaching herself to hollow and carve works of increasing scale and ambition.

Eleanor works only with trees grown in Britain, felled due to decay. A deep knowledge and a passionate interest in the natural properties of wood result in forms that seem true to the spirit of the material and which encourage us to look at the complexities of nature with a new perspective. Material is transformed into objects that invite touch and reflection, reminding us of our elemental relationship to the earth.

Eleanor's work is exhibited internationally and included in prestigious museum and private collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, Museum of Arts and Design, New York, Museum of London and Mint Museum, USA.
