Tairseach Chiúin (Quiet Threshold), 2026
14 x 10 x 14cm | 5.51 x 3.94 x 5.51 inches

Drawing upon the architecture of Ireland’s ancient passage tombs, this work reimagines the threshold as a site of presence, passage and contemplation. The circular form functions as both vessel and aperture, holding an illuminated centre while inviting the gaze inward. The contrast between the dark, deeply worked surface and the radiant core evokes tensions between earth and ether, absence and illumination, permanence and change. Through its stillness and contained light, the piece speaks to the act of holding space for reflection, memory and quiet transformation.

Emmet Kane is an Irish wood artist whose practice explores material memory, landscape and the quiet resonance between past and present. Working primarily in wood the natural surface processes, he creates sculptural vessels and wall-based forms that balance contemporary abstraction with references to ancient ritual objects and sacred architecture. Deeply informed by the archaeology of Ireland, Kane draws inspiration from passage tombs, standing stones and early devotional forms, translating these influences into refined contemporary works.

Central to his practice is a sensitivity to process: turning, texturning, ebonising, fuming and gilding become acts of transformation, revealing the expressive potential of natural materials. Oak, ash and other native timbers are often used, connecting the work to place and heritage. Gold leaf introduces light, stillness and a sense of inner presence.
Kane’s work invites slow looking and contemplation. Through texture, form and luminosity, he creates objects that speak quietly of endurance and shelter.
