"The Pohutukawa is one of New Zealand's best-known and most visible native trees. It is found virtually everywhere along the coastline of the upper half of the North Island. The tree has a remarkable ability to cling to steep cliffs and hillsides and grow in other seemingly impossible locations. The crimson flowers it produces from November to January have given the Pohutukawa the label the "New Zealand Christmas Tree". Certainly, for generations of kiwis, the flowering Pohutukawa is one of the great symbols of the Christmas holiday season, and early flowering is an indication of a long, hot summer."
