Pupura Corallium, 2023 | Gregory Gallegos, Haslett, Michigan
Maple, acrylics
4.25 x 6.5 inches
This hollow form is turned from maple, textured, and colored with acrylics in a calming color scheme. The carving and texture give the piece a sculptural feel. It's very organic and nurturing. Very oceanic in its color and feel.
When I started turning my main passion was to create. It was to create beautiful art that could be available to everyone, that I could give the wood a second life and really make people happy. I love the variety and flexibility you have with wood, that throughout the years my passion has always stayed burning inside me and my ideas just grew and grew. My process is not very different I’m sure than most that turn or create, I believe it is your skill and how you can utilize it. When I am designing and bringing to life a new piece, I can envision the beauty of it right away and turn until it truly is visible. Maybe in my mind, that is what turning is, peeling back layer by layer of wood that I see, that is just holding back the true beauty of it underneath. My inspiration is truly the beauty of nature and bringing people together. Nature grounds all of us as humans and creating something out of wood, something so ordinary, that everyone can appreciate inspires me every day.
Woodturning is not something new but what sets me apart from the others is my take, my approach and my creativity with what I create. I take local, reclaimed hardwoods and turn them into beautiful pieces of art. I use exotic woods and burl as well. I love taking wood that would be seen by others as no good and turn it into something breathtaking that you wouldn't think otherwise. I love playing with different embellishment styles, painting, bleaching and carving wood. I love getting ideas for different pieces and trying different techniques. Many people love the podlets or wooden flowers I have made, I wouldn't say I'm known for them but that is absolutely a piece that is very requested when I'm teaching classes. I have a very distinct style and you can tell my work apart from others. My pieces may vary in shape, size, embellishment etc. but they all can be recognized as my work. Every day I am proud to create art that moves people, excites them and I'm proud to be a part of the woodturning community.
