Janine Wang | Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Hickory 6 x 1.75 x 1.75 inches | 15.24 x 4.445 x 4.445 cm

We cut this tree down during that week in early summer when the sap runs and loosens the bark from a tree’s body. Hickory’s cambium is stronger than anything, used to weave chair seats and as lashing in Appalachian bark basketry, and its wood is the strongest domestic wood we’ve got, used to build tools that last.

As a woodturner and basketmaker, an awl is ever-present in my shop. Although all it does is poke little holes in things, it reminds me of the simple means by which makers use tools to commune with the natural world, and the craft language that is born out of the understanding that we gain.

Janine is an artist and educator currently based in Philadelphia.

She has worked for years in the home goods and furniture design industries while keeping one foot firmly rooted in the woodturning and hand-crafted world. Today she teaches woodworking and woodturning beside her studio practice, helping to spread the joy and empowerment of building the environment we live in, one object at a time.

Janine teaches at Bucks County Community College and TinyWPA. She holds a BArch from the Cooper Union School for the Advancement of Science and Art and an MA in furniture design from the Rhode Island School of Design.
