Janine Wang, Corvallis, Oregon
New Sun, 2025
Oregon sunstone, Oregon ash
6 x 6 x 6 inches | 15.2 x 15.2 x 15.2 cm

This is a homesick piece. It's made out of Oregon Ash, which only grows in this little strip of the country, and an Oregon Sunstone, which is extremely distinctive to Oregon and is the state gemstone.
The split turned walls were turned at the same time from the same blank, left thick to show off the turned surface and give it that Chinese roofline.
There's a famous Chinese poem hidden inside the piece, which every Chinese-speaking kid learns in school, and which I know by heart despite being barely fluent. I think of it every time I'm homesick.
Janine is an artist and educator based out of Corvallis, OR. She is originally from Queens, NY, and until recently, called Philadelphia home. She discovered woodworking while studying to become an architect, and worked for years in the home goods and furniture design industry, where she remembered to keep one foot firmly rooted in the woodturning and hand-crafted world. Today she teaches woodworking and woodturning full time, helping to spread the joy and empowerment of building the environment we live in, one object at a time.

Janine received a BArch from Cooper Union, a MA in Furniture Design from Rhode Island School of design, and a working education from the city of Philadelphia, as well as many residencies across the US. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Teaching within the Wood Science and Engineering department of Oregon State University’s College of Forestry.
