“Piranesi” is a novel by Susanna Clarke. The fictional main character, Piranesi, is named after the real architect known for his etchings of elaborate inner worlds, fictional prisons. Without giving the story away, the novel is atmospheric, simple, and told from a single point of view. Clarke was previously known for a heavily researched, complex, magical historical fiction with many characters. In the years between these two very different novels, Clarke was struck by a mysterious permanent condition which significantly affected her brain, quality of life, and ability to write. “Piranesi” came after she found a way to write again.
I think about memory a lot because mine is so poor. The contents that pass through the "vessel" of my brain are less permanent than the interior shape of the vessel itself, a shape which I've worked hard to reinforce as the one thing I really can do. The shape embedded inside the brick is a multi-axis motif that is designed to fit the dimensions of my hand, and comes from many experiences, memories, skills, and feedback from wonderful people and places. The whole brick can be wielded easily, and gives its holder a great deal of courage!
