I first saw Bill Luce’s work at the Instant Gallery during the 2000 AAW Symposium in Charlotte. It was an elegant and perfectly executed simple pine bowl that left a deep and permanent impression on me. His mastery of pure form and his ability to turn the humblest of woods into such a stunning piece has been an inspiration ever since.
Bill’s premature departure led me to reflect on the fragility of life. Climate change is exposing the fragility of our planet and our personal existence on it. Fire is one manifestation of the challenges we are facing and seemed an appropriate focus since it destroys and is fueled by the material we woodturners need for our work.
