Generations, 2016
Redwood, maple, mesquite
6 x 6 x 5.75 inches | 15.24 x 15.24 x 14.6 cm

Generations represents the birth of a new era, or a second round of woodturners.
From a mature seed tiny spheres emerge, tenderly uplifted by healthy, budding leaves. The sprouting seed symbolizes the master/amateur relationship, in which skills are shared and cultivated. The sculpture’s base represents the rich, fertile soil needed for thriving growth, soil created by predecessors who have passed on, leaving behind the precious nutrients needed for seedlings to flourish. In my experience, the AAW provides a fertile environment, rich with a legacy of innovation and technique-sharing, where the growth and development of new woodturners is carefully nurtured.

This sculpture is composed of lathe-turned and carved Redwood, and carved and bent Maple. Natural Redwood was finished with oil varnish. Ink was applied by hand and airbrush, and finished with lacquer. The base is lathe-turned Mesquite, textured with pyrography and finished with lacquer. Inspiration for this piece came from one of my previous sculptures, in which motherhood is symbolized by a female form sprouting from a seed. The idea behind this sculpture was also influenced by the artists from the first AAW Spheres exhibit who have helped me learn and grow through demonstrations, classes, and personal mentoring.
