This work takes the most literal form of Holding Space: a cube that contains another space. When closed, it reads as a single, ambiguous volume. Only through engagement does it reveal an interior.
The exterior is made from old-growth redwood salvaged from the Mendocino Coast—once structural and load-bearing, now forming the surface of this object. Ebony frames the edges, a material often associated with rarity set beside one more commonly understood as construction lumber. In their proximity, the redwood is reconsidered—its value shaped not by scarcity, but by care, context, and use.

Jennifer Anderson is a furniture maker and woodworker whose practice spans functional woodworking, sculptural objects, and most recently, women’s fashion clogs. Working primarily in wood, she explores the relationships between material, structure, and use. She divides her time between her studio practice and teaching at Palomar College in San Marcos, California, where she leads the Cabinet and Furniture Technology program.

Anderson studied Environmental Design at UC Davis, trained as a fine cabinetmaker at the College of the Redwoods under James Krenov, and earned her MFA in Furniture Design and Woodworking from San Diego State University under Wendy Maruyama. Her work has been featured in numerous publications, including Fine Woodworking magazine and she has received two Windgate residencies.

Her current project, with her partner, is restoring a former dairy barn on the Mendocino Coast into a community-based woodworking studio and gallery.
