Caging Sisyphus, 2023
Jill Kyong | Moscow. Idaho
Walnut, bleached boxelder 5 x 5 x 4 inches | 12.7 x 12.7 x 10.16 cm

Sisyphus is the Greek god who was punished by Hades and forced to roll a boulder up a hill. When he neared the top, it would roll down to the bottom and he would have to do it again, for eternity. This piece represents a cage with the boulders we must roll in life. There is a door, but we must figure out how to close it.
The wood stones are loose and can be arranged as one likes.

Jill Kyong received her BFA degree from the U of MN, with a focus on metal casting. She then got distracted by family and life and eventually found herself in Little Rock, where she taught wood classes at the Arkansas Art Center (now the Windgate Art School). Jill returned to making art in 2017, with wood as her primary medium. She now lives in Moscow, Idaho where she makes relief art, sculpture, and furniture.
