Amherst Pheasant Feathers Pen, 2022 | John Underhill, Ottawa, Illinois
Polyester resin, amherst and silver pheasant feathers, rhodium, 22k gold pen components
5.25 x 0.625 x inches | 13.335 x 1.5875 x 0cm

Thirty individual feathers were used to make this unique and smooth-writing rollerball pen. Feathers from each bird differ in their own little way, making every pen unique and one of a kind. For this pen, Amhearst pheasant and silver pheasant feathers were used to construct an overlapping pattern on a brass tube. Next they were cleaned, sealed and clear cast in polyester resin to make a blank, then turned down on the lathe to match the rhodium and 22k Gold component diameters. After assembly, the pen was buffed and polished to a glass like finish.

Woodworking and Mother Nature have always been a big part of my life. It was only fitting that the I combine the two in my creations. I enjoy the expanding my creative process in my projects, which is why I began resin casting. Fifteen years later I'm still learning. I like trying new ideas and creating something different. I don't make pens to sell--instead I gift or donate them to friends, family and fundraisers. That keeps it fun for me.
