Natural Feather Collage Rollerball Ink Pen, 2020
60 bird feathers, Resin, Rhodium & 22k gold parts

This is a Rhodium and 22k Gold Rollerball ink pen. The body of the pen is made using real bird feathers. Feather patterns differ from bird to bird making each pen a unique and one of a kind. During the construction each feather is artistically arranged, one at a time, to complete the collage and then cast in clear resin to encase and magnify them. This pen has a total of 60 feathers from six different species including Silver Pheasant, Mallard Duck, Snowflake Quail, Himalayan Partridge, Ringneck Pheasant, and Mearns Quail. The procedure entails selecting and placing the feathers, cleaning and preparing them for casting, drying time, mold placement and pouring the resin, curing time, demolding, turning, polishing and assembly, completing the three-day process. All of these feathers come from domestic raised birds, making it legal to use them.

About John
Woodworking as been my hobby since 1985. I've ventured in crafts, small furniture, scroll work, intarsia and turning. I began resin casting around 2010, when I joined the International Association of Penturners. I enjoy the creative side of planning and casting a new blank as much as I do turning it. I have won many awards with my work and enjoy demonstrating at local and state symposiums. Because of my love for the outdoors, I find much of my inspirations from Mother Nature which can be seen in my castings of seashells, pinecones, acorn caps, antler, nuts, snakeskins and pods. I am mostly known for my feather cast blanks which I sell at Exoticblanks.com . To date I don't sell pens, I sell pen blanks. These sales allow me to make and donate pens to local charities and fundraisers. As an artist and a demonstrator, I enjoy trying new ideas and inspiring others to do the same, finding what works for them.
