Though wildfire damage is usually visible and above ground, in 2020 I encountered a type of fire damage that was new to me. I saw trees where the fire had burned away every trace of the root system while leaving the trunk intact, lying on the ground next to where it had grown. The intricate negative space left by the root system in the baked earth made me think about how, after a disaster, sometimes all you can see is what isn’t there anymore. This pit-fired form is what was left after the bowl was burned away.

Kalia Kliban is primarily a turner of functional bowls. Like all residents of Sonoma County she has been forced to come to terms with the increasing presence of wildfires in her area. Her piece in this show is a response to a walk through the site of the 2020 Glass fire.
