Physically, this piece came about very quickly, though the thought process was years in the making. I wanted to make a turning that had movement, had a shimmy and attitude. I hope I have done so. The title comes from one of my heroes in the world of stone sculpture and furniture design, Isamu Noguchi. Though there is no direct influence on its design, I would like to think there is a connection
Beyond the simple turning of a bowl, one hopes that the object itself has a bit more life, more movement and meaning than simply "containing".
Keith Gotschall has had a working life that spans many vocations. Designing and building furniture has been a primary passion of his career. Wood turning has also provided for not only his livelihood but also a creative outlet. Sculpture, in stone, wood and metal has been where his most expressive work has found an outlet. With myriad shows, exhibitions and museum displays, his work has found a wide audience. His work continues to explore and evolve into an amalgam of his influences and interests.
