The Dancer and the Dance, 2021
Laura Mays | Fort Bragg, California
White oak, Bluetooth speaker 5 x 5 x 5.75 | 11.2 x 12.7 x 14.6 cm

The poet William Butler Yeats asks “how can we know the dancer from the dance? In other words, form and content are engaged in a paradoxical, inextricable tangle. The dance doesn't exist without someone to dance it, the dancer is defined by performing a dance.

This box "contains" sound, and its form is interesting enough to hopefully make someone slow down and be intrigued with it as an object. Quartersawn oak is usually associated with institutional settings and gravitas, but here it contains the relatively trivial Bluetooth speaker, causing a slight glitch in the consciousness of the user/viewer.

Laura Mays is an Irish woodworker, designer, and educator. She is the lead instructor and program director at The Krenov School, Mendocino College, in Fort Bragg CA.

Trained originally as an architect, Laura gravitated towards woodworking as a more holistic and engaging practice. She studied architecture at University College Dublin, Furniture Design and Manufacture at the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, a Masters in Design at the National College of Art and Design (Ireland), and at the College of the Redwoods Fine Woodworking Program in Fort Bragg CA (now The Krenov School). She has taught at the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (Ireland), Center for Furniture Craftsmanship (ME), the Port Townsend School of Woodworking (WA), and Penland (NC). She has exhibited in the USA and Ireland, and has work in private collections in both countries. She has a piece in the collection of the National Museum of Ireland.
