Artist’s Note
“Inspired by the nature of traditional Romanian chip-carving and by the title of this exhibition, I have created a mandala in wood. Mandalas have represented many things throughout history, but always the pattern is designed to draw in the eye and the mind to focus on inner meanings. True art is inseparable from the unconscious workings of the mind. For so many years I have been lost in contemplation as I pursue my quiet craft of carving. I feel connected to the earliest Romanian carvers, the shepherds who carved their wooden belongings. As they sat on a hillside, knife in hand, they must have been surrounded by the sound of the wind, the smell of the earth, the touch of sunlight so I believe their work is a direct expression, through repeated patterns, of all that they felt and knew. So, too, do I express myself through my patterns. My universe is to be found in what I make, it is all that I think, all that I dream.”
