French Boxwood Vessels, 2000 | Mark Sfirri, New Hope, Pennsylvania
French boxwood, 9 x 8 x 4 inches

The wood used for these was a piece of French Boxwood that I brought back from France. After teaching a series of workshops in Puy St. Martin, France, I thought of creating a new series of painted vessels. I did make a handful of natural wood finished pieces as well. These two vessels are a hybrid. They have a natural finish but also contrasting texture and ink in some areas of them.

They are the only ones that I made in this style. One is 9" and the other 8" tall.

Mark's specialty is multi-axis spindle turning, an area that he has been exploring since the early 1990s. He has lectured and demonstrated his techniques throughout North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Norway. His work is included in the permanent collection of twenty-eight public institutions including the Renwick Gallery, Yale Art Gallery, Museum of Art & Design, Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Carnegie Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the James A. Michener Art Museum, among others.
