Pangolin, 2017
Walnut, milk paint
3.5 x 3.25 x 3.5 inches | 8.89 x 8.255 x 8.89 cm

"The gentle and endangered pangolin is native to Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. They eat ants and termites using a long, sticky tongue, and quickly roll up into a tight ball when threatened. Heartbreakingly, they are rapidly being hunted to extinction for their scales and meat. To emphasize their vulnerability, I made this piece the size of a baby pangolin – it fits into the very human hand that can either save or destroy it. I painted it to look like a fossil, which is what the species could become without our help. 10% of auction proceeds will be donated to the IUCN SSC Pangolin Specialist Group. Much of my work focuses on protecting wild creatures and places. The endangered pangolin, with its ability to curl up into an almost perfect ball for defense, seemed a good fit for the "Sphere-Second Round" show. The piece is turned, rotary carved and textured, torched, and milk painted."
