Imagery from travels often provides a mishmash of dreamlike content for a piece. Aotearoa (land of the long white cloud) is inspired by a recent trip that Graeme and I took to his native New Zealand. Graeme's classic bowl form provided a canvas for me to carve and color in honor of some animal friends we made on our journey. On the shore of Lake Taupo an endangered black-billed gull took great interest in our fish and chips- I was likewise captivated by its bright red and white eyes. While exploring Wellington's coast, the creeping forms of sea stars and the nubby texture of sand dollars snuck into my imagination and also found their way into this work.

Melissa & Graeme have a shared love of wild places and a desire to protect them. Their collaborative and individual work is inspired by the places they grew up (Canadian Rockies, coastal New Zealand) as well as the journeys they take when teaching. Always filling their pockets with ideas- (and shells, and rocks) they hope to share their love for the natural world with their work and to inspire care for its irreplaceable wonders.
