Artist Statement: Diatoms are single celled microscopic organisms that are ubiquitous around the world. They form the base of the ocean’s food chain, and produce 20% of Earth’s oxygen. Diatoms have existed for millennia, and form glass skeletons of amazing intricacy and variety, their unique mineral composition allowed them to be preserved without fossilization. Diatom skeletons (frustules) abound in deposits known as diatomaceous earth. Some of these deposits have been dated to the Miocene epoch (5-23 million years BCE). Scanning electron images of some of these ancient diatom frustules provided the inspiration for this piece.
