Find Your Bearings, 2017
Wood, stainless steel ball bearing, gesso, wax
5 x 5 x 5 inches | 12.7 x 12.7 x 12.7 cm

“Find Your Bearings” is to recognize or determine one’s orientation, position, or abilities relative to one’s surroundings or situation.

I must say, this was a terrifying, tedious and pretty exciting experiment. After turning the sphere, I created a jig to fix my router at a consistent depth so that I was able to rotate the sphere to create a maze with an undercut track which captures a ball bearing. It is a literal and figurative reflection of the idiomatic expression.

Turned sphere with routered maze track. Finished with wood bleach, gesso and wax.
