I believe wood carries memory and stores it for safekeeping. The Lignum vitae wood used to carve this deep bowled spoon was given to me many years ago by David Ellsworth. One of the strongest and most dense woods of the world, this piece has striking heartwood and sapwood contrast. I present it as an offering, holding space for appreciation, beauty, respect, and experiences shared. David’s gift of friendship resides in this spoon.

For over 50 years, Norm Sartorius has specialized in transforming rare and exotic woods into sculptural spoons, elevating the common kitchen utensil into fine art. His spoons are treated as non-functional objects of beauty, often referred to as spoons to stir the soul. His work is held in more than 20 prestigious permanent museum collections, including the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian's American Art Museum, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, and the Yale University Art Gallery. In 2025, he was named a "Master of the Medium" by the Smithsonian’s James Renwick Alliance.
