Earth Air Fire Water, 2021
Cherry wood, silver, water-based wood dyes
5.4 x 2.9 x 5.4 inches | 13.8 x 5.8 x 13.8 cm

Earth, air, fire and water are contained in harmony in this bowl. They are the original four ancient elements in alchemy, and the inlaid patterns depict the symbols traditionally used to represent them. Earth is an inverted triangle crossed by a horizontal bar; air is an upright triangle crossed by a horizontal bar; fire is an upright triangle; water is an inverted triangle. The wood is cherry. Each dot is a piece of tarnish-resistant Argentium silver, inserted and glued into a precisely drilled hole. The bowl has been colored with water-based wood dyes, and finished with Danish oil.

Roger Bennett is an Irish woodturner. He specialises in making distinctive bowls and vessels, which are inlaid with silver and colored with wood dyes. He also makes jewelry, using similar techniques. He has featured in numerous exhibitions both in Ireland and overseas. There are examples of his work in many public and private collections, including the National Museum of Ireland, the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Fuller Craft Museum, Massachusetts, and the Contemporary Museum, Hawaii. A former teacher, he is a graduate (English and French) of Trinity College, Dublin.
