Stephen Hatcher
Washington, United States
“For several decades I was an avid mountaineer in the Pacific Northwest. Passing through gnarled trees on an approach, finding holds in crystalline rock, and being immersed in the constantly changing weather were awe-inspiring experiences. In 1998, seeking relief from the pressures of my electronics career, I first tried woodturning and stone carving. These disparate materials were soon merged as I developed techniques to create imagery from my mountaineering experiences in woodturned objects with mineral crystal inlay. An interest in Japanese art and Buddhist poetry influenced the designs as my technical skills developed. I now strive to conceive and create pieces that reach out and connect with others - works to stir the viewer's memory and evoke a moment in time.”
Stephen Hatcher showed an aptitude for realistic drawing at an early age. Upon finishing high school he earned income painting murals in homes. Though art has held a lifetime interest for Stephen, several years at the University of Washington lead to degrees in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics. During his 20-year career as an electronics entrepreneur Stephen developed numerous cutting-edge devices for the wireless communications industry. Retiring from this field, Stephen turned his focus to woodturning and stone carving. Combining these techniques led to his unique style of artwork.
