Sprint
Mesquite
11" x 11" x 4"
Jim Keller, b. 1943
Richmond, Texas, United States
Artist note: Sprint is # 54 in my Evolution of the Wheel Series. It was turned on five axes. Both of the bases shown are provided with this piece.
About the artist: After a 42 year career as a Civil Engineer, Jim Keller has enjoyed the creative freedom of working as a full time studio artist since 2007. Through his lifelong love of wood he has evolved from a carpenter, to a woodworker, to a wood turner finally to a sculpture. He is always looking for unique pieces of wood that will allow him to develop an interesting design for the sculpture. His goal as an artist is to combine fair curves and drama with the character and natural beauty of a piece of wood to create an individual unique sculpture highlighting natural edges and negative space.
Keller is always looking at sculpture in other medium for inspiration. After seeing the work of Jesus Morales, a stone sculptor, Keller was inspired to investigate the wheel form. His first wheel included a
scorched sphere representing a meteorite that penetrated the center of the form. That piece was entitled “Evolution of the Wheel”. Little did he know at the time that this would be the start of a series exploring the wheel form.
Keller’s artistic journey broadened as he started making molds of his wood sculptures and casting them in bronze. He is looking forward to creating dynamic new sculpture.
Jim Keller is represented by several prominent galleries specializing in wood art, and he has work in public and private art collections.
