Climate change is a contentious topic.
My sincere belief, backed by direct observation, is that climate change is real but past any point of reversal. Scorched Earth depicts a future earth devoid of icecaps with a massive cyclone forming in the South Pacific. Over time, I’ve personally witnessed the effects of climate change in the Arctic, where they are much more evident than in the continental United States. These experiences came in part from being an Artist-in-Residence at Denali and Gates of the Arctic National Parks in 2013 and 2014, respectively.
A spherical box with a threaded connection of the two halves. Exterior surface is inlaid with Earths major continents and islands, then dyed, painted and lacquered. The interior is airbrush painted with acrylic colors.
About the Artist:
Stephen's emergence as an artist followed a circuitous path. He showed an aptitude for realistic drawing at a very early age and upon finishing high school he earned income painting murals in homes. Though expressing himself artistically in many mediums over the years, his first career was as an Electrical Engineer and Mathematician.
During a 25-year career as an electronics entrepreneur he developed numerous cutting-edge devices for the wireless communications industry. During these decades he was also an avid mountaineer in the Pacific Northwest and therein found inspiration both esthetically and spiritually. Upon retiring from engineering, he turned his focus to woodturning and stone carving. These disparate materials were merged as Stephen developed unique techniques that create imagery in woodturned objects using inlaid mineral crystals. An interest in Japanese art and Buddhist poetry influenced the designs as his technical skills developed.
In 2013 and 2014 respectively Stephen was an Artist-in-Residence at Denali National Park, Alaska and Gates of the Arctic National Park, Alaska. Stephen teaches design, inlay, and finishing techniques at six renowned schools as well as demonstrating or lecturing at clubs and symposiums across the country and internationally. He resides on Oyster Bay in western Washington State with his wife Brenda, several pets, and a 1000 sq. ft. shop/studio. Stephen strives to conceive and create pieces that reach out and connect with others - works to stir the viewer’s memory and evoke a moment in time.

All EOG auction items will be available for on-site viewing beginning Thursday, June 23 at 5:30PM CDT at the Kansas City Convention Center. Remote bidding on-line opens May 26, 2017. The live auction starts at 7:30PM (Central) on Friday, June 10. Remote bidders will be able to bid during the auction via a live audio and/or video feeds. You must be pre-registered to bid online.
Downtown Kansas City, Missouri tax rate of 10.475% will be applied to all purchases paid for and picked up at the Symposium site.

After the purchase price has been paid in full and after the sale has been completed, property must be removed from the auction at the Buyer’s expense. The American Association of Woodturners will, as a service to Buyers, arrange to have the property packed, insured, and shipped via UPS at the request, expense and entire risk of the Buyer. Any claims will be between carrier and Buyer.

2. DISPUTES: The American Association of Woodturners shall designate the winning bidder after each item is auctioned. If a dispute arises between two or more bidders, the American Association of Woodturners reserves the right to reopen bidding. The American Association of Woodturner's designation of a buyer shall be final.
3. BIDDING & PRE-BIDDING: The American Association of Woodturners is providing internet and live bidding as a service to bidders. Bidders acknowledge and understand that this service may or may not function correctly the day of the auction. Under no circumstances shall a bidder have any claim against the American Association of Woodturners or anyone else if the internet service fails to operate correctly before or during the live auction.
4. The American Association of Woodturners has the right to accept or deny bidders from attending their auctions, both in person and online.
5. Online bidders agree and understand that they will not be invoiced and may not be able to pay until the entire, onsite auction is over. All purchases will be charged to your credit card immediately following the auction. Any other payment arrangement must be arranged and approved by the American Association of Woodturners a minimum of 48 hours prior to the auction.
