Lot #290
Sugar maple burl
11" H x 15" W x 15" D
Chris Ramsey
Somerset, Kentucky
Chris was introduced to woodturning in 1993 and became a full time woodturner in 1999. “I came to particularly enjoy turning fresh cut or ‘green’ thin-wall natural edge pieces. To allow the creative process of exploring shapes, designs and new possibilities is extremely rewarding.
This sugar maple burl was turned from a “green” or fresh cut burl. Turned in a side grain orientation, I chose a closed form design utilizing the natural bark edge. The entire design was created from one solid piece of burl and the three legs were indexed for even spacing and carved to achieve a flowing design. After turning, carving and sanding, the piece was dried for a few months, was hand sanded and finished with several coats of sanding sealer followed by several coats of catalyzed lacquer."
Ramsey’s work can be found in several galleries, craft shops, in permanent collections of museums and numerous private collections. He has exhibited in the United States, the Far East and Europe.
In 2003 Chris was invited to the White House by President George W. Bush for a ceremony in the Oval Office to present the sitting President with a few pieces of his artwork. “My artwork has found its way into some famous and influential people’s collections including actors and actresses, country music singers, professional athletes and politicians. My career in woodturning has opened many doors and I’ve met some wonderful people. The journey has been extremely rewarding.”
