The functional vessel is prized for its ability to hold, to carry, and to transport. In prioritizing aesthetics and beauty over utility, this piece explores the role of self identity through object making. Transforming this log of sycamore found on the streets of Philadelphia into a shallow live-edged bowl showcases its natural beauty. By weaving dyed reed in wandering lines around the rim of the bowl it becomes a drawing in space and a declaration of my own ideas of beauty. This piece attempts to claim a space for myself as an artist within the field of woodturning.
