"I made "This is Me" as a metaphor for my growth as a wood artist. I began in 1990 as a traditional Romanian wood carver and steadily developed a reputation for my neo-traditional work. Since 2014 my work has become more sculptural, and this piece reflects the changes to my creative life and the influences that have shaped my work. The spoon is me and the trail of chips is both a link to my past and a departure. I am not fleeing, I am embracing a new future."

About the Artist:
A qualified engineer, Zina Burloiu also studied sculpture for three years at the Brasov School of Arts. She trained as a traditional carver and by 2013 had become the most well-known and respected traditional woodcarver in Romania. She has made a name for herself as a teacher and demonstrator in the USA, Canada, France, Germany, England, Bulgaria, Poland, Holland, Sweden, Australia and Greece. In 2014 Zina participated in the first-ever international collaborative wood sculpture project to be held in China in the city of Dongxiang, and in 2015 she competed in the World Crafts Council international wood sculpture competition held in Dongyang, China. Also in 2015, she was invited into the international residency for wood artists run by the Center for Art in Wood in Philadelphia, USA. In 2017 she exhibited at the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, MA.
