Thomas Kamila | Ashburnham, Massachusetts
China Blue, 2026
10 x 15.2 x 15.2cm | 5.75 x 6 x 6 inches

My technique starts with a green red oak log mounted and turned on its pith. The large turning is dried in a controlled way to retain its precise geometry, then remounted on the lathe, trued up, and sectioned. The geometry of the initial turning holds within its space the intention of the final piece. Instead of assembling a large turning from small pieces, my process requires the creation of a large piece that is dissected to reveal a smaller form within.

Thomas Kamila graduated from Worcester Industrial Technical Institute with a certificate in Machine and Tool Design in 1971. In 1975 he became an apprentice with the Massachusetts State Carpenters and worked as a Project Superintendent in the commercial construction industry until 1992. From then until retirement in 2015 Mr. Kamila was a vocational instructor in Massachusetts with a Carpentry approval.

Prior to his teaching career Mr. Kamila was a very successful woodturner. His woodturning was included in many local and national publications including Fine Woodworking Design Book Six. His work was included the exhibition Conservation by Design shown at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian as part of its national touring schedule in 1994. His work is also included in the Neutrogena private collection. The cover of American Woodturner March 1992 featured his creation of The First National Exhibition of the AAW at the FAM Museum in Fitchburg Mass.
