Checking the Cheek
Birch, latin Betula alba, grown at lat 56.8610, long 14.8744 at the farm Hagalund, Holstorp in Sweden was used for the bowl. Harvested around midsummer and dried for approx. 2.5 years 9 weeks with leaves on the tree. The remaining drying time in barn as logs, with chunks of bark removed. Logs dried standing up. The outside of the bowl is painted with egg-oil-tempera where the egg was layed by healthy hens.
5.4 x 5.25 x 5.3 inches | 13.8 x 13.3 x 13.5 cm

Artist Statement: The bowl being turned was put into vibration mode—by means of the super-sharp gouge—
to sing the praise of woodturning.
The traces of the “dancing gouge” were recorded on the upper part of the bowl. (The sharp-sighted observer can also see the overtones.) Any use of sandpaper would have turned the music into dust.
The silver suture, appropriate for wooden bowls, will eventually oxidize to match the “skin”, leaving barely a trace of that natural
imperfection.
