The amount of variations of forms that can be produced on a rotating axis on a lathe is enormous. From my point of view the challenge is to make a balanced, simple form that catches the eye to such an extent that the spectators eyes find rest and makes it worthwhile to continue scanning for another moment. In the subsequent moment(s) the eye will search for points of interest and potential excitement. The real big thrill comes about when the eye can decode something barely visible. At this point the search for more points of interest gets new nourishment.

Ulf Jansson, woodturner and engineer.
45 years of woodturning has brought about thousands of hours of happy turning related thoughts. To understand the technique is the base for further developments. The turning makes use of both sides of the brain; the left mechanical and the right artistic! Using low speed and extremely sharp tools are sources for control and safety and thus commence a possibility base. One foot in the past and one foot in a visional future is a perfect “soil” for production of artefacts with high technical quality as well as excitement content.
The mantras “where skill ends, sandpaper starts!” and “many woodturners hide bad skill behind a beautiful piece of wood” are always present in the turning process.
During a period as Artist-In-Residence in Japan the belief that “less is more” deepened and has granted a place in the Swedish National Museum of Fine Arts.
