In my collaboration with the work of Bill Luce, I wanted to preserve intact the elegant shape of his vessel while incorporating facets of my own style. In my own work I have embellished wooden orbs with bands of metal. I decided to do something similar with the Luce vessel, but with significant differences.
Instead of wrapping bands of metal around the piece, I embellished the negative space, by ebonizing it. Thus, the “bands” are the original surface of the wood. I continued the surface embellishment by applying seven circles in silver leaf.
The silver circles add contrast and are a nod to the work of Art Deco artist Jean Dunard, who was known for his geometric surface treatment of vessels.
