About the Artist:
I am a New England based artist/educator. Born and raised in Japan, I spent most of my life in Tokyo, surrounded with excessive information and ceaselessly evolving technology. I had little interest in them and instead, I longed for something more indigenous and diverse. With a fondness of making things, and an education in architectural design, I found my way to woodworking in the rural town of Takayama.

After two years of intensive woodworking/furniture making training at Shinrin-Takumi Juku, I worked at the school for an additional four years as an assistant to master woodworker, Shoji Osamu. It was six years of profoundly mesmerizing experiences. I then moved to the United States for graduate school where I studied under Wendy Maruyama at San Diego State University. Once, she noted, ‘You gotta be a little insane’ a phrase, which has never faded from my memory, and I somewhat stick to in spirit.

From 2006 to the present, I have been fortunate to teach in the Furniture Design Department at Rhode Island School of Design. While being a part-time instructor, I bridge gaps in the academic year with artist residencies, which enable me to focus on my work.

I feel very blessed to have discovered woodworking and the light it brings to my life. I manipulate wood to express ideas and have come to relate to it as my third language.
